A parent or guardian who believes that the parent’s or guardian’s child is not ready to attend school at the designated age of mandatory attendance may make application to the principal of the public school that the child would attend for a one (1) semester or one (1) year deferral in required attendance.
Because mandatory attendance in Tennessee begins at age 6, this allows a parent or guardian to make application for a one year deferral in required attendance for that child, or until age 7.
