August 12 | Bills needs help, contact your senators

H.R. 9351 was introduced by Representative Harrigan, and S. 4783 was introduced by Senators Cruz, Budd, and Moody. Both bills are currently in committees but have not yet been attached to the annual military spending and policy bill, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

The toughest challenge for these bills and the Home School Graduation Recognition Act will be garnering enough votes in the Senate. We need your help to reach all 100 senators before they return to Washington in September.

Please consider taking these steps to help these bills pass the Senate:

  1. Please email your senators here. If you have a personal story about how these bills would help you, please share it. 
  2. Call your US senators at their DC office (202-224-3121) with a simple message: “Please help homeschool families by supporting the Home School Graduation Recognition Act, S. 3747, and the COMPASS Act, S. 4783.”
  3. Attend an upcoming virtual or in-person town hall meeting with your US senators and ask them to support the Home School Graduation Recognition Act, S. 3747, and the COMPASS Act, S. 4783. The best way to find out when and where your U.S. Senators are having a town hall meeting is to check their webpage, social media, or call their office.

Summary of H.R. 9351/S. 4783

Military members move frequently and with these moves come additional challenges. For military members with families, one of these complications is switching schools. Military homeschool families must learn the homeschool laws of each new state while also setting up a new house and everything else that comes with a move. H.R. 9351 and S. 4783 allow homeschool families, moving on military orders, to choose whether to follow the homeschool laws of their state of permanent residence or the new state they moved to on military orders. This is optional, and families choosing to participate in classes or sports in their local district will likely need to comply with the homeschool laws of their new state.
