What is the HSLDA Referral Rewards Affiliate program?

The Referral Rewards Affiliate program (or Affiliate program, for short) monetarily rewards any enrolled organization or business who refers qualifying new HSLDA members. Any business or organization with an EIN (federal tax ID number) is eligible for the program (individuals do not qualify). Although this is not limited to homeschool groups, the information below will guide you through the process for a homeschool group. Once you sign up for the HSLDA Referral Rewards Affiliate Program, you’ll receive a unique hyperlink assigned to you that you can post on your website. We’ll even provide sample wording for your newsletter or website. For more information, see the rest of the FAQs (below) or contact HSLDA’s Group Services department.

What is my Affiliate link and how does it work?

Your link looks like this:, where 1234567 represents your unique Referral Rewards Affiliate number. Clicking that link does two things: (1) sets a cookie for your group on the user's computer that lasts for 30 days and (2) redirects them to the page which tells them why they should join. If the person joins within 30 days, your group will get credit.

You must use this unique Affiliate link in order to get credit; the general-use HSLDA hyperlink or button ad does NOT link back to your HSLDA Affiliate account. As of August 2016, clicking the Affiliate link is the only means to receive credit. For bookkeeping reasons, we are no longer able to award credit for those applying on paper or at conferences, nor can we apply credit retroactively.

What is a "new member"?

For HSLDA Referral Rewards Affiliate purposes, a new member is someone who has not been a member of HSLDA within the past six months. We are not able to give credit for renewals or for new members using the payment plan option.

How do we sign up?

Fill out the registration form online and mail, email, or fax your W-9 with EIN.

What is the best way to advertise this to prospective HSLDA members?

The most efficient way to give out your unique code is online, so they can simply click on the link to join and credit your organization or business with the membership referral. This can be done via e-newsletters, emails, blogs, and/or websites. Click here for banner links, buttons, and other samples to include in advertising.

What information can we put on our website or in our newsletter?

Sample wording:
Join using our HSLDA link and [Your Group Name] will receive $20 (new HSLDA members only). Joining HSLDA is a great way to support homeschooling freedoms and homeschooling in [Your Town] at the same time!

We don’t qualify yet to be a Discount Group. Can we still be a Referral Rewards Affiliate?

Yes, if you fill out the registration form, supply your EIN on a W-9 form (see application instructions), and are not applying as an individual.

When are checks issued?

Checks are issued quarterly to Affiliates with ten referrals in their accounts. If your group has fewer than ten referrals on file for the quarter, those will accumulate for the next quarter(s).

Checks are sent to the address on file for your group or organization, so be sure to update your contact information with HSLDA.

What is an EIN and how do I get one?

An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is also known as a Federal Tax Identification Number, and is used to identify a business entity. Generally, businesses need an EIN. Apply through the IRS (by phone, by fax, by mail, or by applying online at IRS Online Application for EIN).

Do we need an EIN to participate in the affiliate program?

Yes. We cannot send you a check unless we have an EIN (via W-9) for your group. You need to send us a W-9 form in order to report the EIN.

Can I just give you my EIN?

No, we need to have the W-9 for tax purposes. We may need to issue you a 1099 form at the end of the year. It is easy to obtain a W-9.

Do we need to be incorporated to get an EIN?

No. You can be an unincorporated association.

Do I need to file a tax return for our group if I get an EIN?

If you are an unincorporated non-profit association, you only need to file Form 990 if the organization’s annual gross receipts exceed $25,000.

Will our member families still get the Discount Group rate?

If you are also a Discount Group with HSLDA, then your member families will still receive their discount. Their membership fee with HSLDA is not affected by this program. Many families may be pleased to know that $20 of their $100 membership fee is being re-invested into their state or local homeschool group.

If you are not a Discount Group, then your member families will not receive a discount on their HSLDA membership. For details on how to qualify as a Discount Group, see the Discount Group Program FAQ.

If our group is a Discount Group, doesn't that make us an Affiliate?

No. They are two separate programs.

What is the difference between the two programs?

The Discount Group program is specifically designed to encourage and benefit homeschool groups and their families, while the Referral Rewards Affiliate program rewards any organization or business who refers HSLDA members. Most Discount Groups can also qualify to participate in the Affiliate program, but not all Affiliates qualify to become Discount Groups.

If we're not a homeschool group, how does this work?

Thank you for your support of homeschooling and of HSLDA! We'd like to thank your business for referring new families to us by offering you $20 per new referral. Simply sign up and then advertise HSLDA using the button provided, the sample wording in your newsletter or on your website, and/or other promotional material we will be happy to provide.

Sample wording for business use:

Join using our HSLDA link and [Your Business Name] will receive $20 (new HSLDA members only). Joining HSLDA is a great way to support homeschooling freedoms and [Your Business or Industry] at the same time!
