Since 1983, HSLDA has fought to defend homeschool freedom in the courtroom, the legislature, and the media. Part of protecting that freedom is making sure that inaccurate information about homeschool law doesn’t get a chance to spread.

On August 20, 2024, we discovered that an independent news outlet in North Carolina had misstated the testing requirements of the law, implying that the DNPE was authorized to compel homeschool parents to send in test scores. Concerned, we sent EdNC a request for a correction.

The good news is that EdNC acted quickly and put in text that accurately quoted the law about homeschool testing.

For the record, here’s what the actual law says, “For one year after the testing, all records shall be made available… at the principal office of [the home] school, at all reasonable times, for annual inspection by a duly authorized representative of the State.”

There is no requirement to send homeschool test scores to anyone.

Of course, the bad news is that after more than 40 years of fighting for accuracy about homeschooling in the media, HSLDA is still daily having to fulfill our mission of being advocates for homeschool freedom.
