HSLDA is seeking an associate attorney to join our legal team, providing a critical and rewarding role serving our member families. This is a full-time, on-site position in our Purcellville, VA office. Because this is a junior position, recent graduates are welcome to apply as well as licensed attorneys with a couple years of experience in any area of practice.

What You Will Do 

  • Achieve thorough familiarity and stay up to date with the homeschool laws of multiple states.
  • Assist families in potential or actual conflicts with officials in assigned states.
  • Answer simple and complex questions about homeschool laws in assigned states.
  • Maintain quick turnaround time on incoming emails and phone calls.
  • Conduct research projects as assigned.
  • Maintain supportive relationships with homeschool leaders.
  • Work to promote homeschool-friendly policies, regulations, and laws in multiple states.
  • Analyze and respond to legislation in assigned states.
  • Promote homeschool freedom amongst homeschooling families, the media, legislators, and the public.
  • Speak on behalf of HSLDA at events as assigned or invited.
  • Author articles about homeschool laws and recent cases.
  • Represent families in court as assigned.
  • Maintain collegial, supportive relationships with other departments.
  • Assist other attorneys in their duties.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the director or president.

What You Will Bring 

  • Prior homeschool experience (i.e., you yourself were homeschooled or some/all of your own children have been homeschooled)
  • Juris Doctor degree
  • License to practice, or have taken (or are planning to take) the bar exam, in at least one state
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Computer and technology savvy
  • Ability and willingness to travel (once or twice a month on average)
  • Ability to work independently with high efficiency
  • Willingness to learn
  • Fluency in Spanish preferred
  • Being a committed Christian
  • Passion about HSLDA’s mission to advocate for homeschool freedom in the courts, legislatures, media, and the court of public opinion
