The North Dakota Home School Association is a statewide Christian 501(c)(3) organization that has supplied information and resources to anyone in need since 1985. It was founded by concerned citizens who had already taken the then-illegal step of teaching their children at home. In 1989 the ND legislature passed the first home school law. Since that time the number of home educators has increased dramatically and the NDHSA office now operates with three part-time staff positions. As the only statewide group in ND, the NDHSA provides oversight of the legislative process relative to home educators; hosts an annual convention featuring nationally-know speakers, large vendor hall, dozens of workshops, used-book sale, art exhibit and support group leaders' banquet; sends a monthly e-newsletter; provides a Superintendents' Packet and a Monitor Packet; publishes a statement of intent in conjunction with HSLDA; and answers hundreds of mail, phone, and email inquiries each year.
