Anyone may join HSLDA to support our advocacy for advancing homeschool freedom and get access to our member benefits—such as exclusive educational resources, state-specific legal forms, and member discounts.

Our legal services are not guaranteed to members in every case. If you have specific questions about the cases we assist with, check out our Legal Support FAQs.

If you indicate on your membership application that you need help resolving a legal problem affecting your homeschool, we will need to review your application. We will typically contact you about your legal situation within 3 business days.

Membership acceptance is determined after legal review is complete, which may take several weeks.

If we determine we can help with your homeschool’s current legal situation, we will activate your membership and you will get access to HSLDA member benefits.

If we cannot assist you with your legal situation, you will have the option to withdraw your application and receive a refund of your membership dues (minus any rush fee).

To receive an initial contact within 1 business day, you can accelerate your application with a nonrefundable rush fee of $40.

If your family needs immediate assistance, we suggest that you expedite your membership application with the $40 rush fee. You will receive an initial contact about your legal situation within 1 business day. Because processing a rush application requires the immediate diversion of HSLDA resources, the $40 fee is nonrefundable.

Legal assistance for your current situation is not guaranteed. Be sure to include details about your situation in your application and be prepared to submit copies of relevant documentation (letters, court documents, etc.).

If we cannot assist you, you will have the option to withdraw your application and receive a refund of your membership dues (minus any rush fee).

Yes, homeschooling families who live outside the United States and those who are citizens of other nations are invited to join HSLDA.

HSLDA’s Global Outreach team is willing to provide counsel for international members who encounter difficulties. While various factors (such as citizenship, military status, and local laws) impact the methods by which HSLDA can assist you, our staff will always be committed to advocating for homeschooling freedom.

You’ll also receive discounts on products and services through our Member Savings program, special pricing on HSLDA Store products, and a subscription to our quarterly magazine, the Home School Court Report.

Note: If you are a resident of Canada, please check out HSLDA Canada.

Once your application has been reviewed and your membership activated, you will receive a welcome email. Then you will be able to immediately access your membership benefits by logging into your online account.

Anyone can create a free HSLDA account to get additional resources on our website, like recorded webinars and high school transcript templates.

Yes! HSLDA members have access to fillable, printable forms (such as notices of intent, affidavits, and withdrawal forms) that provide all information required by state law. HSLDA’s legal team can also answer questions from members related to their forms and assist with completing or filing documents when needed.

For more information about how we can help you, please contact your state’s legal team.

HSLDA has state-specific legal forms for members only. On our interactive legal map, click on your state and then scroll down the page until you see a section titled Homeschooling Forms

No. Consistent with government regulations and ethical standards, we cannot guarantee representation in every case or on every appeal.

One of the primary ways we make homeschooling possible is defending families when their homeschool program is threatened, and we have assisted tens of thousands of members and nonmember families with legal challenges since our founding in 1983. But there are situations where HSLDA might not provide legal representation to a member. Examples include (but are not limited to) when there is conflict of interest, when the proceeding is predominated by nonhomeschooling issues outside our mission, or when a proceeding involves significant prior litigation.

HSLDA membership can save you money in many ways!

Your membership includes services that could cost you hundreds (or even thousands!) of dollars elsewhere—services like attorney consultation about any homeschool question, legal representation if your homeschool is taken to court, a 24/7 hotline for emergency legal assistance, and much more.

HSLDA offered one-on-one consulting as a part of our member benefits until April 2024.

We then began transitioning to offering exclusive how-to-homeschool guidance via member-only webinars, master classes, articles, and other resources that can be accessed 24/7 on our website. We still have a team of Educational Specialists that produce exclusive content for our members and speak at events.

Our decision to move away from educational consulting arose from the tremendous growth of homeschooling since 2020. New sources of consulting and support are developing for home-educating families as more parents realize, “I can homeschool, too!” At the same time, with homeschooling’s rising profile, we are seeing increased scrutiny by legislatures and the media.

HSLDA’s core mission has always been legal advocacy for homeschool freedom. As new challenges to this freedom emerge, we want to sharpen and strengthen our advocacy: from defending member families whose right to homeschool is being challenged, to supporting favorable legislation, to encouraging research about homeschooling’s benefits, to representing homeschooling to journalists and the media, to building solidarity with homeschoolers around the globe.

Be assured that our legal consulting will continue. This has been our mainstay member benefit since our founding in 1983. It’s even in our name: Home School Legal Defense Association! You can always call or email with your homeschooling-related legal questions, and a member of our legal team will provide personal assistance.
