Compulsory Education Age
6–13 (Begins in September of the calendar year in which a child turns 6 and finishes at the end of the educational year in which a child turns 14.)
Legal Status
Homeschooling is considered illegal. All students must be registered in state or private schools and attendance is compulsory, per the National Education Basic Law (Law No.6287/7, enacted March 30, 2012). Distance education classes are available through the national TV channels and children then go to a test site to take exams for the courses they have studied. Parents who do not send their children to school are charged as criminals, resulting at times in imprisonment. Many families are currently faced with problems due to homeschooling. As the education law explicitly refers to Turkish children, foreigners may have an easier time homeschooling.
