Summary of L.B. 1112

As introduced, L.B. 1112 gives the Nebraska Department of Education the authority to set up a statewide uniform grading system. The sponsor has stated that his goal is for this system to apply to every single school—including homeschools.

Homeschool parents, as the teachers of their children and the administrators of their schools, are the ones who should be in charge of assigning grades, not the Department of Education.

Research consistently shows that homeschooled students are not disadvantaged in relation to their peers and that there is no correlation between increased government oversight and improved grades in homeschools. Homeschool graduates perform well both in higher education and the workforce generally, even without such onerous regulations.
