Since 2019, the practice of home education has been practically banned in Hungary. It is allowed only for students dealing with situations that preclude regular school attendance, including students with serious health issues or those who travel frequently for activities such as sports.
The law does not explain exactly what the cases of exception are—it only states that “individual schedules are permitted by the [name of the central authority] at its discretion, ensuring that the education given individually is beneficial.”
But in practice, only the cases mentioned above get exceptions from everyday school attendance. This results in many families moving to nearby countries that permit homeschooling—or at least moving close to their borders. Top destinations include Austria or Romania, or just about anywhere else in Europe.
Focus on Parental Rights
Hungary’s government has enacted some very family-friendly measures, which we applaud. These laws have made Hungary known for taking a bold stand in protecting the traditional family, but there is a great lack of freedom in parental rights, and there is no willingness to discuss or change this shortcoming.
But there is still reason to hope.
We have been praying for parents willing to stand up for their rights to direct their children’s education—as stated in our Constitution. And recently, as an answer to prayer, several families contacted us almost all at once to say they wanted to join in the fight
We are about to institute a legal association to represent families who are homeschooling and to encourage those who would like to begin teaching their children at home.
We’re excited about these changes, and we ask that you pray for our efforts to promote homeschool freedom in Hungary.
