Legal Status

According to the Ministry of Education, homeschooling is still widely unheard of and not explicitly addressed in the education law of Guatemala.

However, families can homeschool through the Hebron School and receive recognition from the government, per Act 2116 of December 22, 2005. The Hebron School’s homeschool diplomas are backed by the government, while diplomas bestowed by a parent are not currently recognized by the government or academic institutions in Guatemala. The Hebron School is working with the Ministry of Education to introduce homeschool legislation to create further positive changes for families who wish to homeschool.

Students can also take classes at umbrella schools and are not likely to face legal issues.

For students that cannot attend a state school, there is a state program available for distance learning at home. You can learn more about this option on the Ministry of Education’s website.
