Legal Status
Homeschooling is legal in Grenada.
According to the 2002 Education Act (Laws of Grenada, Chapter 86), a parent of a compulsory school age child may educate a child at home, subject to the program requirements in the law.
The Education Act also covers legal requirements for home education:
- The parent must register the student with the Chief Education Officer on an annual basis prior to starting the homeschool program and submit an education plan for each student that ensures compliance with the law. Chapter 86, Section 113(3).
- The home education program “must be based on the national curriculum as established by the Minister….” Ch. 86, Sect. 113(3)(e).
- Homeschooled students must be assessed on a regular basis and the Chief Education Officer must communicate the assessment results to the parent. Ch. 86, Sect. 113(6)
- Homeschooled students may access the facilities and equipment of public or assisted schools upon payment of a prescribed fee and under prescribed conditions. Ch. 86, Sect. 113(5)
