WHAT IS IT?

What is the “Make Homeschool Safe Act”?

The “Make Homeschool Safe Act” is a model bill proposed by opponents to homeschool freedom. Their stated goal is to protect homeschool children, but their solution is an unprecedented level of government oversight that is both unnecessary and ineffective.

What the MHSA proposes:
  • Mandatory subjects and hours of instruction
  • Submission of intrusive medical records
  • Increased documentation and reporting to school districts
  • Academic oversight if parents don’t meet teaching qualifications
  • Annual academic evaluation reviewed in-person with the student by a “qualified educational professional”

OUR RESPONSE

Why We Strongly Oppose the MHSA

Restricts homeschool freedom
The MHSA claims that more regulation is necessary to protect children. In reality, homeschool freedom gives loving parents the widest latitude to help their children flourish, because parents are best equipped to help their children, not bureaucrats.
Imposes one-size-fits-all standards
Homeschooling works because it allows families to customize education to each child's needs, learning style, and pace. Mandatory standardized assessments and curriculum requirements destroy this crucial flexibility.
Creates unnecessary barriers
Many successful homeschool parents would be disqualified simply for lacking formal credentials. These arbitrary requirements would prevent dedicated parents from providing the individualized education their children need.
Sets dangerous precedent
Accepting government authority to regulate home education opens the door to ever-increasing control. Today's “reasonable” oversight becomes tomorrow's restrictive regime.
