On May 10, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds signed Senate File 546 into law, changing assessment due dates for many homeschool families, expanding parent-taught driver education, and making some other small changes. The new law goes into effect on July 1.

For families who file a year-end assessment (Choice 3), the due date for administering the assessment will change from May 1 to May 31, and the date for submitting the results will change from June 30 to August 1. The new dates apply starting with the 2021–22 school year.

The right to provide parent-taught driver education has been expanded. Previously, it was available only to homeschool families. Now it will be available to parents without regard to how the child is being educated.

The bill makes some less noteworthy changes as well.

Our thanks go to Homeschool Iowa for taking a leadership role on the bill.
