This week the Tennessee Legislature passed House Bill 2818, which includes several changes in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Two of these changes will provide additional flexibility for homeschooling families this school year:

  1. The requirement that homeschools provide 180 days of instruction has been waived for the 2019–2020 school year.
  2. For families using the independent homeschool option (option 1), the standardized testing requirement has been waived for the 2019-2020 school year.

This bill has passed both the House and Senate and is currently awaiting Governor Lee’s signature.

For families enrolled in church-related and accredited online schools, please be sure to follow any school-specific policies. This law waives the above legal requirements for homeschooling, but does not itself change individual school policies.
