Medical Benefits Restored to Arizona Home Schooler

Recently, Home School Legal Defense Association assisted a member family in Arizona whose child was denied medical insurance benefits due to his status as a home schooler.

After Mrs. C.'s son, a high school senior, had turned 20, her insurance company indicated that because he was not enrolled full-time in an accredited educational institution, he would not be covered under her medical plan.

HSLDA immediately wrote to the company, explaining that parents have a constitutional right to home school and that Mrs. C. was in full compliance with Arizona education law by doing so. We requested that the firm reconsider its decision.

The insurance company quickly agreed to reverse its denial of benefits and cover Mrs. C.'s son for the rest of the school year.
