Senator Jesse Helms Announces Retirement

After 30 years of service, Senator Jesse Helms (R-NC) announced on August 22 that he would retire from the United States Senate.

Senator Helms' leadership will be greatly missed by the home school community. During his five terms in the senate, he has been a committed champion of religious and family freedoms. He has also been an important ally in the fight against the United Nations' anti-family agenda in treaties such as the Convention on the Rights of the Child. As chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Helms publicly promised in 1997 that he would "never allow the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child" to come up for a vote on the Senate floor, and he remained true to his word.

Home School Legal Defense Association is thankful for Senator Helms' many years of service to his country. We wish him and his family God's abundant blessings in this new season of his life.
