Scott A. Woodruff, Esq., Staff Attorney of HSLDA

From the HSLDA@Capitol Hill E-lert Service...

February 15, 2001

Dear Maine Members and Friends,

The February 21 hearing for L.D. 405 is drawing near. Home schoolers
all over Maine are joining hands to prevent the unfair imposition of
MEA testing on home school and private school students.

We are grateful that the following committee members have stated they
will oppose the bill:

Senator Betty Lou Mitchell, Chair - Etna --- strongly opposed
Senator John Nutting - Leeds --- opposed
Rep. James Skoglund - St. George --- opposed
Rep. Vaughn Stedman --- strongly opposed
Rep. Carol Weston --- strongly opposed

Our thanks to Homeschoolers of Maine (HOME) for sharing this
information. The following committee members, however, are either
undecided or have not made their position public:

Senator Margaret Rotundo - Lewiston --- (207) 784-3529
Rep. Shirley Richard, Chair - Madison --- (207) 696-3049
Rep. Mabel Desmond - Mapleton --- (207) 764-1011
Rep. Elizabeth Watson - Farmingdale --- (207) 582-7047
Rep. Stephen Estes - Kittery --- (207) 439-3479
Rep. Glen Cummings - Portland --- (207) 775-2560
Rep. Mary Black Andrews - York --- (207) 363-414
Rep. Mary Ellen Ledwin - Holden --- (207) 989-4627
Rep. Donald Soctomah - Princeton --- (207) 372-8893

Please focus your phone calls on the lawmakers above who have not
expressed opposition. These are the key votes that could stop this
oppressive piece of legislation in its tracks. Those committed to
opposing the bill are still in the minority. A powerful show of
solidarity among home schoolers and private school families at the
hearing scheduled for Feb. 21 is crucial to ensure defeat of this
bill. Please attend the hearing if you possibly can.

It would be fine for older, attentive children to come as well.
Children with short attention spans might have a difficult time. Plan
to arrive half an hour before the scheduled start time to allow time
for parking and walking to the hearing room.

Sincerely yours,

Scott A. Woodruff, Esq.
