When a manufacturing company withdrew its job offer to a promising applicant because of his homeschool education, Home School Legal Defense Association intervened by focusing on home education success.
A Texas homeschool graduate applied for a position with a manufacturing company and was offered the job with full benefits. More than just a career choice, the job was essential for him to continue supporting his family.
But the required background check threatened to derail his plan. The company that completed the applicant’s background check was unfamiliar with homeschooling and reported that it was unable to verify that the applicant was a high school graduate, despite having reviewed both his diploma and his high school transcript.
In response, the manufacturing company rescinded its decision to hire the homeschool graduate.
Arguing for Equal Treatment
The graduate called HSLDA immediately. Staff Attorney Darren Jones contacted the manufacturing company, explaining Texas homeschool law and pointing out that the U.S. military, U.S. Department of Education, and Texas colleges and universities recognize homeschool graduates on an equal basis with all other graduates.
According to Jones, discrimination against homeschool graduates is unacceptable. “We aren’t looking for special treatment for homeschoolers; we just believe they should be treated like all other graduates,” he said.
After receiving our letter, the manufacturing company quickly reversed its course and scheduled the graduate for orientation.
