“Educators for Maine” Loans and Loan Forgiveness Now Available to Homeschool Graduates

by Scott Woodruff • June 26, 2019

Home instruction graduates are now entitled participate in the “Educators for Maine” program. This program provides loans and loan forgiveness for students pursuing a college education that will prepare them for a career in education, child care, and related fields when all requirements are met. More details about the program are available here.

Previously, only students graduating from public schools or state-approved private schools could access this program. With the governor’s signature on L.D. 1601, the program is now available (starting in the 2020-2021 school year) to graduates of Maine home instruction programs.

As originally filed, the language of L.D. 1601 was problematic. Homeschoolers of Maine and HSLDA teamed up and worked with the sponsor, Representative Teresa Pierce of Falmouth, to make the necessary technical corrections.
