Family Turns the Tables on Unauthorized Investigation
by Scott Woodruff • September 11, 2018
A representative of a Regional Office of Education sent a letter to HSLDA members informing them that their homeschool was under investigation. The representative asked the parents to identify what program they were using so she could determine if it was “commensurate” with public school standards, and asked for evidence of the children’s progress.
After asking Home School Legal Defense Association for help, I gave the family guidance in preparing a letter to send to the representative.
In the letter, the parents confirmed that their homeschool program was in compliance with Illinois law. The letter also asked the representative what authority she was relying on in asserting that the program must be “commensurate with” public school standards, and in asking for evidence of the children’s progress. Finally, the letter asked the representative to share with the family any evidence she had that indicated that the family was out of compliance with any applicable law.
The family heard nothing further from the representative.
