Movement Grows as Families Join Together

By Christian Homeschoolers in Austria

In Austria, homeschooling is allowed, but it is not very popular and not many families see homeschooling as an alternative to public schools. In May 2013 a few Christian families were interested in meeting and supporting one other. Small, irregular meetings started in Linz, Upper Austria. Also two official websites were established: Christian Homeschoolers in Austria and Homeschoolers in Österreich. More and more Christian families, who were not initially interested, started homeschooling.

The desire grew to organize a conference for a weekend with talks for parents and activities for the children.  Soon a small house for the weekend was found, but after one month the conference was fully booked. Wow, so many families were interested in gathering together!  Fortunately another facility came available, which was larger and situated in a beautiful area surrounded by mountains. Registrations from Austria, Germany, Great Britain and even the United States came in—38 adults and over 40 children of all ages and backgrounds.

The international atmosphere along with the fact that the families realized there were other like-minded people made this conference very special. The children were offered different activities in sports, arts, history, missionary stories, science, outdoor activities, etc. Different speakers informed the parents about topics like homeschooling and the family, faith and science, the legal situation in Austria, and materials for hands-on teaching. One of the highlights was the campfire in the evening where children and whole families sang and played their musical instruments. As the conference center was a self-catering facility, even the cooking and the dishwashing were done in great teamwork.

Two nights was too short, and the hope for a second homeschool event was so great that we decided upon a date for a 2015 conference during the weekend. The second Christian Homeschool Conference will take place from September 17th to 20th, 2015 in St. Gilgen, near the awesome lake Wolfgangsee in the Austrian lake district, Salzkammergut.

The Christian Homeschoolers in Austria operate two websites, Christian Homeschoolers in Austria, and Homeschoolers in Österreich, to support families who are interested in or currently homeschooling.
