Latvian Parliament Expands Homeschooling
August 31, 2015: The homeschooling movement in Latvia has grown quite rapidly, particularly in the last five years.

 Country Information

Compulsory education age: 5-16

Legal status of homeschooling: Homeschooling is legal, though uncommon. The Latvian law on education (01/06/1999, LV-17.11.98, nr. 343) states in Chapter I, § 8, paragraph 4 that “education in the family” is an available form of education.

Families may currently homeschool children up to grade four by partnering with a school. However, proposed legislation that would come into effect in late 2015 expands homeschooling up to grade six and removes requirements for families to coordinate with the local government in addition to partnering with a school. Homeschooling is also possible beyond grade six via long distance studies or formal home study programs. Please contact the groups below for further details.
