Calls Urgently Needed to Pass Religious Freedom Bill
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:
Arkansas House Bill 1228, legislation that would create the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (formerly the Conscience Protection Act), needs your immediate help. Your calls and/or emails to your state representative are urgently needed to pass this bill that is under attack by uninformed opponents and in danger of being defeated. HB 1228 would ensure that an individual’s right of free exercise of religion is protected by the highest legal standard.
HB 1228 passed the House of Representatives on February 13 by a wide margin and then passed the Senate with amendments on March 26. It is now back in the House for a vote to concur with the Senate amendments. But there is tremendous pressure being put on state representatives by outsiders and others to kill this legislation. This week the House will cast the deciding vote on it. I can’t overstate the importance of contacting your state representative today to express your support of this religious freedom bill.
Twenty-one states, including the surrounding states of Missouri, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, and Oklahoma, have all enacted religious freedom laws similar to HB 1228. Members of the House need to know that the citizens of Arkansas also want the protections of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.
Because of intense lobbying, Governor Asa Hutchinson has wavered in his support of this legislation. He needs to hear from you as well.
1. Please call and/or email your state representative with this message or something similar in your own words:
“Please vote for House Bill 1228, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which would ensure that an individual’s right of free exercise of religion is protected by the highest legal standard. Every state that borders Arkansas has enacted a religious freedom law similar to HB 1228.”
When contacting your legislators, it is not necessary to identify yourself as a homeschooler. This issue is broader than homeschooling.
You can find your state representative’s contact information online.
2. Please call Governor Hutchinson’s office and ask that he support House Bill 1228, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, by signing it into law. His number is (501) 682-2345.
3. Please forward this email to every family you know who is not a member of HSLDA and urge them to contact their state representative and the governor about this bill.
You can read the text of HB 1228 online.
Please call or email today!
