Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,

Your help is urgently needed to defeat a bill that would repeal the right of parents to exempt their child from vaccinations if it is against their religious beliefs.

Maryland law currently exempts children from vaccinations if their parents have religious objections. House Bill 687 would repeal that exemption.

A hearing on the bill is scheduled for Monday, March 16.

Action Requested

If your representative is listed below as a member of the committee, please call them before Monday. Your message can be as simple as: “Please vote no on HB 687. Please protect the right of parents to exercise their faith by exempting their children from immunization.”

Contact Information

The committee this bill is assigned to is the Health and Government Operations Committee. The members of that committee are:

Background

Nearly every state allows parents to exercise their faith by exempting their children from vaccinations. Recent exaggerated reports in the media overlook the fact that the free exercise of religion is a fundamental right.

It’s usually very simple to find a medical consensus on how to treat an illness. But opinions vary widely on the topic of the prevention of illness. What you should eat, how you should dress your kids, how much you should exercise, what supplements are harmful or helpful, what chemicals to avoid, how lifestyle affects illness, etc., are all matters of debate. Vaccinations fit squarely within the realm of debatable prevention, not treatment. And because prevention is a judgment call, parents should be allowed to make that call, especially when the ground for their decision is rooted in their religious faith.

The National Vaccine Information Center offers additional helpful information.

Extreme makeovers are for extreme circumstances...

Most homeschools don’t need an extreme makeover, but there is something to be said for attention to detail and recognition of accomplishments. Watch the media and you’ll soon see that not everyone wants home educators and homeschooling to look good. HSLDA works hard to shed light on the good work of home educators so it’s obvious that we don’t need someone “making-over” our homeschools. Join HSLDA and help us show the world that we’re fine as we are…thank you!
