Dear HSLDA Members and Friends in the Enlarged City School District of Middletown:

As you know, last night HSLDA represented three local families in appealing the rejection of their annual assessments by the Enlarged City School District of Middletown’s (ECSDM) superintendent, Dr. Kenneth Eastwood.

Our local HSLDA-allied attorney and I argued passionately on behalf of our three member families and presented our evidence and information for 25 minutes to the school board members. The school board then debated the three appeals for over 45 minutes in a closed meeting.

With over 30 homeschoolers in attendance, the school board reappeared and voted 6–2 to sustain (uphold) the superintendent’s rejection of two of the assessments for our families. The third family’s case was tabled due to the evidence we presented.

While disappointing, this outcome was somewhat expected. We will be working with the families involved to resolve their cases. We will also continue to work with others in the community to persuade Superintendent Eastwood to change his position.

Thank you for all your prayers and support over the last week. While we may have lost these appeals, the local homeschooling community has been invigorated by this situation to continue the fight for homeschooling freedom in Middletown.
