Appeals of Denied Parent-Conducted Assessments, UPDATE!
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends in the Enlarged City School District of Middletown:
As you know, HSLDA will be representing three local families who had their annual assessments rejected by the Enlarged City School District of Middletown’s (ECSDM) superintendent, Dr. Kenneth Eastwood.
In two of the cases the parents provided a written narrative evaluation for their children as they had done in previous years. I will be bringing the appeals on behalf of the families to the board, contending that Dr. Eastwood’s prohibition of parent evaluators is curtailing the freedom of homeschooling parents in ECSDM. A local HSLDA-associated attorney, Michele Neusch, will also be present.
The appeal will take place at Presidential Park Elementary School, 50 Roosevelt Ave., Middletown, NY 10940, tomorrow, Thursday, October 16, at 6:00 p.m. We have learned that while the main portion of the school board meeting, which should begin at 6:30 p.m., will be open to the public, the appeals portion will be classified as an “exempt” meeting, and therefore closed to the public.
Despite this change in format, homeschoolers from the community are welcome to come and show their support for and solidarity with these families during the main portion of the meeting. We believe that while the school board could decide these hearings tomorrow, it is more likely that they will wait and vote on these appeals at some future date. Having several homeschool families at the main school board meeting will demonstrate that this issue is important to the larger homeschool population.
We have also set up a meeting for any interested homeschool parent to discuss the current situation in Middletown and our fight to allow parents to conduct that alternative written narrative evaluation themselves. We also will pray briefly for the success of the hearings. If interested, come to Hope Bible Church; 86/90 North St., Suite 213, Middletown, at 4:45 p.m. We will start promptly at 5 p.m. as the families involved in the hearings will need to leave around 5:30 p.m.
Thank you for all you do on behalf of homeschooling freedom and parental rights in New York.
P.S. We greatly value you and your support—it is a privilege to serve you! If you or someone you know is not a member of HSLDA, will you consider taking a moment today to join or recommend us? Your support enables us to defend individual families threatened by government officials and protect homeschooling freedom for all. Join now >>
