Action Still Needed as Legislature Fails to Act to Curb Homeschool Discrimination
Dear Ohio Members and Friends,
Thank you for your calls and emails to the Ohio Legislature regarding House Bill (HB) 487.
Last week the Ohio Legislature removed language that would have required homeschool families applying to state colleges to obtain a “sworn affidavit verifying the successful completion of a student’s high school curriculum,” and HB 487 passed without any mention of homeschool diploma fairness. While we are glad that there were no additional burdens placed on homeschooling families, the task remains to secure legislative protection from discrimination.
As your legislators return to your district to campaign please continue to contact them and let them know that homeschool discrimination is an important voting issue for your family. Encourage them to support legislation that would stop employers and colleges from using state law as an excuse to discriminate against homeschool graduates.
Although Amendment 2737X1 was not included as part of HB 487, HSLDA continues to work with CHEO to encourage similar language be passed by the legislature. If you or someone you know encounters discrimination on the basis of their homeschooling please contact us.
You have probably heard the story about how NiSource, a large company, hired a qualified graduate but then revoked the offer after they found out he was homeschooled. This case is just the tip of the iceberg, and we need your support to pass legislation that will stop this kind of discrimination.
Ohio law already recognizes homeschooling as a legal and valid means of education. The Ohio Court of Appeals has called homeschooling the equivalent of an accredited education. But private and state-owned colleges and universities continue to create obstacles for homeschool graduates. And while private companies should be able to hire who they want, they should not be allowed to blame state law as a reason for not hiring homeschool graduates. That isn’t true, and the legislature should clarify the law.
HSDLA and CHEO proposed legislation would clarify that colleges and employers in Ohio must treat a homeschool diploma as legitimate—as the law already recognizes that it is. Institutions and companies could still have their own admission and hiring policies, but would not be able to say that state law permits discrimination on the basis of homeschooling.
