State v. S
Father illegally arrested for homeschooling
Filed: December 26, 2002.
Nature of Case: When Mr. and Mrs. S withdrew their son from public school to homeschool, they received a letter and two visits from school personnel trying to force them to put him back in school. On December 26, 2002, the police arrested Mr. S and charged him with truancy. HSLDA retained Michigan attorney David Kallman to defend Mr. S. Before the hearing ever took place, however, we discovered that the prosecutor was under the impression that homeschoolers in Michigan still had to be certified teachers, which has not been the case for years. Based on this, we convinced him to withdraw the charges.
Status: Charges dismissed.
