Platteville Apologizes for Truancy Threat

The Platteville school district sent a letter to several homeschool families on September 21 urging them to submit their annual statement of enrollment “before truancy becomes an issue.”

This threat was completely inappropriate for two reasons. First, the annual statement of enrollment is not due until October 15. Second, the failure of a public school, private school, or homeschool (all three are equally required to submit the statement) to file on time does not toss their respective students into the truancy box.

HSLDA contacted the author of the letter and read the applicable Wisconsin statutes to her. We learned it was her first year on the job and she was just recirculating form letters that had been used before.

She acknowledged that her letter was in error and asked us to convey her apologies to affected families.
