HSLDA's High School Consultants
Sometimes teaching high school may seem like a whole new ball game, whether you are an experienced homeschooler or a brand new one. On those days when you are discouraged and need a listening ear, or you are confused and would like a sounding board on curriculum options, or you are trying to determine where to go for additional help, if you are an HSLDA member you can call (540) 338-5600 or email one of HSLDA's high school consultants. They will direct you to helpful resources, give you some pros and cons of various curricula, and most importantly, refresh you with a reassuring word. Both of HSLDA's high school consultants have walked in your shoes, and they understand what life is like in the trenches of homeschooling through high school!
Carol and her husband Jim homeschooled their son from 1st–12th grade and their daughter from K–12 using a variety of teaching options. The Becker’s son has just completed a master’s degree in Information Technology from Virginia Tech after completing a BS in Systems Engineering at UVA, and their daughter earned a BA with Highest Distinction in French from UVA. As a new High School Consultant for HSLDA, Carol relishes the opportunity to encourage and equip homeschooling mothers because they are raising the next generation of leaders.
During Carol’s homeschooling years, she established two homeschool cooperatives. The first encompassed History/Geography/Drama and ran for eleven years accommodating students from grades 2-12. With a BS and MS in Engineering, Carol also has a passion for science, which led her to form and direct a science cooperative when her son entered the high-school years. She successfully guided a group of dedicated mothers and homeschooled scholars through Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
Convinced that homeschoolers must develop and hone analytical writing skills, Carol has shepherded two different groups of homeschooled students through a three-year original high-school English program consisting of Composition I with Lit., Composition II with American Lit., and British Lit. She also taught Algebra I & 2 and Geometry. Over the past eight years, Carol has coached high school juniors and seniors from the public schools to successfully tame the Timed SAT Writing essay, and she currently tutors writing students from middle school, high school, and community college.
Diane and her husband Tom homeschooled their two children from kindergarten through 12th grade using a variety of teaching options. Both of their children went on to college, and are now well into their careers.
She joined the staff of Home School Legal Defense Association nine years ago to help develop HSLDA’s Homeschooling Thru High School program and website. As an HSLDA High School Consultant, Diane regularly speaks nationwide at homeschool conferences and presents high school symposiums where she shares from her experiences and her imperfect (but real) homeschooling days! Her practical and encouraging high school seminars provide information that inspires parents to continue teaching their teens at home with confidence.
Diane enjoys writing articles (such as regular columns for the Homeschool Enrichment and Court Report magazines as well as other publications), brochures on high school topics, and a monthly high school newsletter filled with helpful tips. She reviews new resources, provides personal consultation to HSLDA members, and has been a guest speaker on HSLDA’s Home School Heartbeat radio program. Her weekly entries to HSLDA’s Homeschooling Now Teaching Tips blog provide parents with timely high school information and advice.
Diane loves math and taught high school math classes for homeschooled students for many years. In her free time, she enjoys teaching ladies’ Bible studies and being involved in pro-life ministries. Graduating from the Pennsylvania State University with a degree in Business Management, she enjoyed a banking career prior to starting a family and beginning her homeschool adventure.
