Alabama does not have a law granting homeschooled students the right to participate in public school classes and activities; thus, the individual schools and school districts have the authority to decide whether to allow homeschooler participation. Policies often vary from district to district.

In 2016, the Alabama High School Athletic Association amended its bylaws to allow homeschool students and other “non-traditional students” to participate in interscholastic athletics with public schools. This was a response, in part, to Senate Bill 186 and House Bill 287 in 2014. There are numerous requirements.
