Child alleged to be in need of care
Filed: February 27, 2001, Allen County.
Nature of Case: The little trouble spot in Kansas is back, this time pursuing a false report to SRS that 14-year-old Jonathon is a "Child in Need of Care due to the failure of [his mother] to have him enrolled in a public or private school, taught by qualified teachers." Jonathon has been home educated for the last five years. HSLDA discovered that a registration was on file with the State Department, but had erroneously been placed on an inactive list. After the error was remedied, County Counsel agreed to postpone the case until April 10, 2001. At that time, HSLDA presented proof that the family follows a schedule, a certificate of enrollment from Christian Liberty Academy and a report card demonstrating the child's educational progress. The prosecuting attorney was then satisfied that the family was in compliance with state law and agreed to dismiss the case.
Status: The order of dismissal was filed on May 1, 2001.
