Wisconsin School Districts Seek Census Information

In Wisconsin local school districts are required to conduct a census. Pursuant to this requirement, two different districts sent Home School Legal Defense Association member families' requests for the names and birth dates of residents under 20 years of age.

Uncomfortable with being contacted by their school district, the families notified HSLDA to discover whether they had to meet the demands of the school districts. Senior Counsel Chris Klicka contacted the schools and, while affirming their need to conduct a census, advised them that families are not obligated to participate. Consequently, the families declined to provide the information sought by their local public school.

If you are in Wisconsin and receive a census notice from your local school district, please understand that you are not required to participate and may decline to give the information requested by the school district.
