Proposal for Participation in Extracurricular Activities

When the South Carolina General Assembly reconvenes in 2006, one of the bills carried over from this year will be Senate Bill 638, which would permit homeschooled students to participate in extracurricular activities at their local public school. Known as the Equal Access to Interscholastic Activities Act, this legislation would give homeschool students access to athletics, music, speech, and other extracurricular activities.

The primary sponsor of this bill is Senator George Campsen (District 43), with co-sponsors being Senators Lawrence Grooms (District 37), Phil Leventis (District 35), Kevin Bryant (District 3), Michael Fair (District 6), Robert Hayes (District 15), and John Hawkins (District 12).

Home School Legal Defense Association takes a neutral position on this type of legislation, but we encourage our member families to contact their legislators and express their support of or opposition to this bill.P
