Waynesville School District Pushes "Letter of Intent to Home School."

The Waynesville R-VI School District sent an HSLDA member family a form titled "Letter of Intent to Home School." The school district asked the family to fill it out and return it.

The family called HSLDA for advice on how to respond and we advised them to disregard it.

After advising the family to disregard the form, we called the school district and talked with the director of special services. We explained that families are not required to submit any homeschool notice. He admitted that he had no legal authority to demand that the family respond.

Unfortunately, many school districts, which attempt to solicit a notice of intent from families, fail to candidly explain that the notice is not required. We recommend that families do not send a notice of intent to homeschool to the school district.
