Home School Legal Defense Association defended home school families' right to privacy in Oklahoma this month when the Alva Independent School District (ISD) attempted to create a list of local home schooling families. Alva ISD mailed a letter this March to home schooling families residing in the area informing them that the district was "required by the state department of education to keep on file a list of those school aged children that reside in our district who are being home schooled." The letter asked families to submit the names and ages of all children in the family who were being taught at home. Oklahoma law does not require home schoolers to notify the local school district that their children are being home schooled, much less require the department of education to compel school districts to collect a list of home schoolers. HSLDA immediately called the Alva ISD and informed them that families are not required to submit the information they had requested. We also advised our members to disregard the letter. By standing together when school districts try to collect more information than the law allows, we can prevent future encroachments on home school liberty across the country. If you are an HSLDA member, please contact us if your school district steps beyond the bounds of the law. |
