ISI Essay Contest

ISI sponsors an annual essay contest in which homeschoolers are welcome (and even encouraged!) to participate. “George Washington and the Future of the American Presidency" is the topic for the essay this year.  Top prize is $1000 and the registration deadline is November 28, 2008 with essays due no later than January 23, 2009.  Check out ISI’s website for more details.

College Fairs

The National Association for College Admission Counseling sponsors a number of college fairs throughout the country.  College fairs are a great way to gather information about colleges and to meet with college representatives.  Check out NACAC’s website to find a college fair near you.

Voter Registration

A reminder for all those who are not registered to vote – voter registration must be completed by October 5th in most states in order to vote in the upcoming presidential election. Check your state’s law for this crucial date. If you have children who turned 18 this year, please encourage them to register to vote.

Calling All Homeschool Entrepreneurs!

A homeschool mom, Debbie Maubach, has developed a wonderful 9- week Homeschool Entrepreneur course for high schoolers.  The course covers many areas of interest including setting up a business plan, marketing strategies, setting prices, and much, much more!  The course provides step by step instructions including worksheets and many hands-on activities.  It’s a great resource to provide your budding entrepreneur with information he/she needs to launch a business while learning simple accounting, business skills, and advertising acumen.

Teacher Discounts

 Did you know that museums give teacher and educator discounts on admission fees? If you are planning field trips this year to museums, be sure to ask about such discounts before paying for admission. You will be asked for identification so take along any homeschool group’s membership card you may have.
