---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- October 4, 2002 Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, Thank you for investing your time to attend the six hearings on the Governor's "Commission to Revise the School Code." Your message was heard! All information we have received indicates that the commission is abandoning the requirement to file immunization records with the local school system, which would have been de facto registration for homeschooled students. Regarding lowering the compulsory attendance age, the Deputy Governor of Education Hazel Loucks indicated that they understood the concerns and were likely to abandon that effort as well. At the Galesburg meeting, Dr. Loucks assured the homeschool audience that "Governor Ryan told me earlier this week that it was not his intention to cause homeschoolers to register in Illinois; it never has been, he said, and he does not want to have it done now." HSLDA Senior Counsel Chris Klicka wrote to the Governor's Commission explaining homeschoolers objections. He included research HSLDA has conducted that indicates there is no significant benefit to lowering the compulsory attendance age.
