Last week, local homeschool families from the Eastern United States met in Washington, D.C. for HSLDA’s Congressional Action Program (CAP) Lobby Day against the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD).

HSLDA’s CAP program was created in 1992 to train local homeschool families how to lobby Congress to protect homeschool freedom. Since 1992, our CAP families have participated in every major battle on Capitol Hill to protect homeschool freedom and parental rights.

On September 9, these CAP families visited all 100 Senate offices and attended meetings with 26 of these to tell their stories and explain how the UNCRPD would threaten them and their children. The event was a huge success as parents and children walked the halls of Congress to stand for freedom.

Voices Heard

At each Senate office, our CAP families handed out folders containing materials explaining why the UNCRPD is so dangerous. Some letters were from veterans organizations opposing the CRPD. Other articles discussed the treaty’s threat to unborn children. Other articles written by HSLDA Founder and Chairman Mike Farris explained the reasons for opposing the CRPD and why RUDs will not keep us safe from the harmful effects of the treaty.

Our CAP families were tremendously supported by your phone calls. On the day before our CAP lobby efforts, we sent out a national e-lert asking homeschoolers around the nation to call their two U.S. senators and urge them to oppose the treaty. As our local CAP families visited Senate offices, phones were ringing off the hook with calls from homeschoolers.

Senate staff from numerous offices mentioned receiving your calls and were exceedingly more interested in listening to our CAP families than on past lobbying days. Your calls showed staff and senators that We, the People, are firmly against this dangerous UN treaty.

On Hold

We are happy to report that it appears that the UNCRPD will not come before the U.S. Senate before Election Day. The Senate is busy with critical legislation and only has a few days left before senators recess, and at this moment, the UNCRPD is not on the calendar.

We are incredibly grateful to our local CAP families and to homeschoolers around the nation for keeping up the pressure against the UNCRPD. You are making a tremendous positive impact on the Senate, and many senators have said that homeschoolers are the ones who are really keeping this treaty from passing. We ask you to continue to pressure the Senate against the UNCRPD.

For contact information for your two U.S. senators, you can visit our advocacy site here. You can also send your senators an email through our advocacy site by clicking on the “Take Action” tab. To find out more about the UNCRPD and to read it for yourself, please visit our website.
