What can Dad do to help his children prepare for the future? President Mike Smith recalls one father's contribution to his son's career on today's Home School Heartbeat.
Mike Smith:
One powerful way we fathers can contribute to our children's future is to identify their strengths early on in life. When our children get excited about a particular area of study or, in later years, a career choice, we can nurture that enthusiasm.
An example of this is the history behind how Mike Farris, cofounder of HSLDA, became a lawyer. In the 4th grade, Mike was working alongside his dad when his dad told him about the law profession. His dad was a public school elementary principal, and saw firsthand what was happening there. While Mike was in high school, his dad encouraged him to consider educational law, because the ACLU was pushing for radical changes in the schools and the schools needed sharp people to defend them from those threats.
Neither Mike nor his dad ever dreamed he would become a lawyer battling for educational freedom, but his dad's encouragement directed Mike to the path God had prepared for him.
Mike's father gave him a career vision. He talked about a lot of choices, but really provided encouragement when it was clear something he mentioned struck a responsive chord with Mike. Dads, be sensitive. Observe the unique talents God has given your children and direct them to training and experiences that will allow them to pursue their careers in the future. And until next time, I'm Mike Smith.
Dads do play a key part in the success of homeschooling. Michael Farris outlines that role in his book The Homeschooling Father, available to you for a minimum donation of $10.
