Opportunities for Struggling Readers

Faith Berens

As a reading specialist, I am always looking for great resources and opportunities to assist students with reading and print disabilities. Recently, I came across a couple of great opportunities through the organization, Learning Ally, (Formerly Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexic).

1. Learning Ally has archived several very helpful and FREE webinars. The latest is described below.

The title is: Helping Dyslexic Children Thrive Listen in on how experienced dyslexia and reading specialist Barbara Steinberg works with parents to maximize success for children who struggle with reading.

2. LEARNING ALLY Accepting Scholarship Applications

Each year, Learning Ally offers two endowed scholarship awards for outstanding students with print and learning disabilities. The recipients of these awards are role models of success and inspiration to students throughout the country. The top three winners from each program receive a $6,000 scholarship award and participate at a national celebration in Washington, DC. Apply for the National Achievement Awards by March 1, 2014.

So home school parents, if you have a child who struggles with reading, is dyslexic, or is impacted by a print disability, I hope you will check out these opportunities!
