Moms -- Remember Mrs. Carson...

MaryAnn Gaver

Hi everyone! Okay, so you're wondering.... who is Mrs. Carson?

Well, we live about half way between Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, MD -- maybe slightly closer to Baltimore where people from around the world visit the famous John Hopkins Hospital in  the downtown area.  A renowned neurosurgeon, Dr. Ben Carson's name often comes up  when people are talking about the best physicians at Hopkins.

A sad fact about Ben Carson is that he had a very rough upbringing. Without a father in the home, he and his brother Curtis had to overcome many obstacles both academically and socially.  What I love about his story is his mom's high hopes and encouragement for her sons.  Here's what Dr. Carson said:

"Over a period of years, with Mother's constant encouragement, both Curtis and I started believing that we really could do anything we chose to do....that we were going to be extremely good and highly successful at whatever we attempted.  Even today I can clearly hear her voice in the back of my head saying, "Bennie, you can do it. Don't stop believing that for one second," "You weren't born to be a failure, Bennie," or one of her favorites: "You just ask the Lord, and He'll help you."

Wow!  I love that. Oh, that we would pass on that kind of support to our children today. In all of their struggles that we would impart words that would be recalled when they most need them!

So keep assuring your kids that, yes, they can do it! Keep being a great mom. God bless you.
