Delicious Apples For September

MaryAnn Gaver

Hi everyone!

Today, I'm at a local farmer's market getting.... what else? Apples! We have a gorgeous fall day in Maryland -- cool, breezy and sunny. A perfect day to be outdoors.

What mom doesn't love the versatility and ease of serving apples? Apples with peanut butter, apples in pies, crisps, sauces, cider and jellies. You name it -- there are a myriad of ways to use apples.

And what's with the warm smell of cinnamon and apples wafting through the house? If my family had to describe a wonderful smell in our house, I hope they would say either freshly baked oatmeal-chocolate-chip-cookies (I'll share my recipe with you soon) or apples with cinnamon. Nothing says autumn like a mouth-watering apple pie made with fresh Granny Smith apples!  I'm actually making one tonight. Usually, we don't have dessert during the week, but today's an exception because we have friends coming for dinner.

If your area has an orchard, apple picking might be a great fall outing with the kids. Although you might not save a lot of money, (as compared to buying apples at the grocery store) the experience might be fun. Also, it's nice for the children to take part in making an autumn treat - whether it's washing, peeling, slicing or preparing the apples for baking.

Pleasant, easily digested and convenient to carry -- I vote apples as the fruit for fall!

Enjoy biting into a beautiful apple today. And if you go apple picking with the kids, don't forget to take your camera to get a few colorful pictures for the homeschool album.

    with joy,
