Photo Contest Guidelines

Submission Dates: June 1st–August 1st
Entries must be postmarked on or before August 1st.

The top 15-20 photos per category will be on display at HSLDA’s headquarters in Purcellville, Virginia, for one year following the contest.

Format and Submission:

  • Each student (ages 7-19) may enter up to 3 photo entries.
  • 8”x10” color or black & white print on photo paper.
  • Prints should NOT be framed or matted.
  • Original photographs only!! No digital manipulation or touchup is allowed, except for cropping and adjustments to contrast, hue, saturation, tone, and sharpness. These techniques must be applied to the image as a whole, not to only certain areas. In other words, we are more interested in the student's photography skill than in his or her ability to digitally manipulate an image.
  • Write the student’s Entry ID on each piece. This number will be found on your Entry Form Confirmation message. NO OTHER identification should appear on these photo, to ensure the judging is anonymous.
  • Traditional techniques during film development and printing are allowed.
