HSLDA: Legal Assistant Position Available

Summary: The Home School Legal Defense Association has an opening starting March 15, 2016, on site in our office (Purcellville, Virginia) for a legal assistant to work with Senior Counsel Scott Woodruff in defending the right of member families to educate their children at home.

This challenging and rewarding position requires strong verbal and written communication skills, a strong work ethic, a quick mind, excellent ability to understand and analyze facts, a professional, caring and compassionate phone manner, a servant-oriented attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, team player mindset, solid public relations awareness, and a passion for homeschooling.

Candidates must be dedicated Christians with the capacity to diligently and independently manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced law office-type environment against a background of potentially high media and public visibility.

The starting salary range is 26-32k based on experience including a generous benefits package. The work environment is collegial, caring and faith-oriented. A two-year job commitment will be requested.

Qualifications and Education Requirements
(Candidtates should have at least one of the following):

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • One year or more of law school
  • Paralegal or legal assistant training or experience

Responsibilities include:

  • Act as initial point of contact for members who call seeking answers and assistance; gather relevant facts and provide assistance and guidance; provide timely follow-up until resolution is achieved; solve problems presented by members that don’t require lawyer input; handle each call in a way that promotes the member’s good will toward HSLDA. Promote home schooling. Achieve thorough familiarity with the homeschool laws of approximately ten states.

  • Detect, analyze and monitor new legislation of interest in multiple active legislatures; communicate with legislators and state homeschool leaders; ensure that relevant accurate information is posted HSLDA’s website.

  • Perform other clerical duties such as scheduling appointments, preparing routine correspondence, answering the phone, responding to email, and reading and routing incoming mail.

  • File correspondence in written and electronic format. Maintain log of phone calls. Assist other legal assistants and lawyers as assigned. Understand and respect office policies. Office dress is business casual with occasional casual days. It is our custom to pray together as a staff for a short time Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

  • Travel to homeschool conferences to represent HSLDA up to 6 times per year (optional).

HSLDA’s office is located in Purcellville, Virginia in Loudoun County on the campus of Patrick Henry College. Only 70 minutes west of Washington, D.C., 40 minutes from the DC Metro system, and 15 minutes from the Appalachian Trail, Purcellville provides a convenient access point to the D.C. Metro area, northern Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia. Recreational opportunities abound nearby—Blue Ridge Mountains, ski resorts, whitewater opportunities, the 45-mile W&OD Bike Trail, Shenandoah River and Potomac River.
